Tummy Otis - 47,5 x 47,5 cm

Tummy is a social design project that draws attention to the 4 million people in the Netherlands living with a stomach, liver, or intestinal condition. The project centers around a cushion with a navel — a simple intervention that transforms the object into a small belly: familiar, tangible, and inviting conversation. The navel was designed in collaboration with textile designer Ischa Stuart.

Each Tummy is made from high quality leftover textiles (a.o. Ahrend Gispen en Bert Plantagie) by VanHulley, a social enterprise supporting women distanced from the labor market. The cushion is filled with buckwheat hulls — a natural residual material.

Part of the proceeds goes to the MDL Fonds to support medical research. Tummy stands for social design with impact: a tangible product, a medical theme, and fair, circular production.
